THE Community Chest of the Western Cape held its equivalent of the Oscars last month, recognising the people and companies that have helped it restore hope in the province. The donor appreciation event may have been short of Hollywood stars, but it did see 18 awards presented for outstanding contributions to the Community Chest and its programmes. "Our donors are our lifeblood, but it's unusual for us to hold a public function to acknowledge their contribution," admits chief executive Amelia Jones.

Daily we are confronted with the realities of the South African higher education situation and student funding. The start of the academic year was characterised by student protests at the Tshwane University of Technology and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The University of the Witwatersrand’s student representative council also grabbed headlines with its bold initiative to raise funds for students in need.

Although the book has been around for a long time, the book has constantly evolved to reflect the significant changes that have occurred in financial markets, financial theory, and the teaching of corporate finance.
