Join us as we delve into the inspiring story of a woman who's not only leading the way but also empowering others to follow.
Juta: Could you give us a brief background about yourself, your upbringing and what you do?
KJ: I am the eldest of four children, raised in a strict environment by a high-profile father. I took music classes at the Conservatorium in Pretoria, practiced the piano for three hours a day, and completed the final piano grade examination when I was in Grade 11 at Menlopark High School. I was a reasonably good swimmer and participated in Saturday afternoon competitions at the Hillcrest Olympic swimming pool in Pretoria, and I also took part in intensive swimming training classes.
Juta: How has your past made you the woman that you are today?
KJ: My determination to work extremely hard through tough times gave me strength. I focused on the future and left the past behind. This journey ignited my passion for empowering others in their careers.
Juta: Could you tell us what made you choose your career path and your reasoning for choosing to write your book “Leadership in Health Services Management”?
KJ: On my way to studying architecture, I was accepted for radiography and nursing. Nursing began earlier in the year, and the idea of staying in a hostel excited me, so I started my nursing studies in Pretoria and later transferred to Windhoek. I excelled throughout my studies, and in 1995, I channeled my creative talent into writing my first book based on my master's research, which became a prescribed text at Unisa. Writing a book empowers others to share in success.
Juta: What inspired you to write this book? Think about how this book could be influential for a young woman in your industry.
KJ: I was a lecturer in Health Services Management and Leadership, with a focus on self-leadership as my career niche in research and writing. I recognized the need for and potential impact of my book, which was the first of its kind in South Africa and aimed to guide younger academics. This book provides a comprehensive overview of essential leadership aspects in healthcare, offering a solid foundation for emerging leaders to become exemplary role models for their teams.
Juta: What are some of the challenges you have faced as a woman in the Health Services sector?
KJ: Challenges are a part of everyday life, but with hard work, you can transform your circumstances and achieve success. To compete on equal footing with male colleagues—some of whom may still believe in their own superiority—it's essential to demonstrate emotional intelligence and deep knowledge in your field. By being well-informed and taking the lead in discussions, you can earn the respect of others and establish yourself as a strong, capable leader.
Juta: Women are increasingly getting into leadership roles as we move closer to an equal society. What are some of the tips highlighted that could be used by women in your industry who are in leadership positions or those who are looking to enter a leadership role?
KJ: You need to believe in yourself and proactively seize new opportunities as they arise. By doing so, you empower yourself and gain recognition. Make sure you stay visible in areas where you have expertise, showcasing your skills and contributions.
Juta: What can we expect in this new edition of your book?
KJ: The book has been reviewed by emerging academics and an assistant editor, ensuring it includes the latest information on leadership.
