The 2015 Southern African Law Teachers’ Conference
Fiona Kaplan, Head of School: Law, IIE Varsity College had this to say about the SALTC prior to the event:
“We’re eagerly awaiting the opportunity to host the SALTC 2015 conference and have been thrilled at the level of interest shown thus far. From the number of abstract submissions received to date, we anticipate a high level of academic engagement between legal colleagues. The reach into the African continent has been encouraging to note with papers coming from as far as Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria.”
As a key sponsor of the conference hosted by the Durban North campus of Varsity College, Juta facilitated many threads of conversation which dominated Social Media before, during and after the event. The conference grabbed media headlines as a host of high-profile speakers drawn from academia, the judiciary and the legal profession discussed burning issues ranging from legal ethics and transformation of the profession, to the high drop-out and failure rate of law students and the future path of the LLB degree.
The overarching theme of the conference centered around ethics in the legal profession and the need for law teachers to promote ethical behaviour and integrity amongst law graduates to uphold these values for the benefit of the society they serve.
Plenary sessions were hosted in the stylishly- appointed Juta Theatre and the thought-provoking speaker presentations made for interesting tea-time conversation. Juta represented in full-force with a team of publishers, marketing and sales representatives who took every opportunity to promote the Juta brand and network with lecturers, Juta authors, students and Law Deans.
The Juta stand was a hub of activity as delegates enjoyed prizes and giveaways. On show were Juta’s law, academic and UCT Press titles. Delegates were also privy to Juta’s handy mobile-device recharge stations.
The conference came to a finale with Juta sponsoring a gala dinner at the magnificent Sibaya Hotel and Resort which was attended by over 240 delegates. The highlight of the dinner was the keynote address which was delivered by Judge Navi Pillay, retired United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Congratulations!
