Writer’s unBlock - A Guide to Legal Essay Writing free for legal students
A guide to aid students in legal essay writing has been compiled by the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) and Juta. This compact and accessible free guide is available to legal students from second year onwards.
SALRC and Juta first published the guide during 2014 to improve the standard of student submissions to the annual Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition. The guide provides students with an outline of the conventions of legal writing including how to structure, reference and acknowledge sources including case law and journals.
Improving legal students’ ability to articulate themselves in written form is a challenge being faced by law faculties. Writer’s Unblock was developed for these reasons among others and driven by our intent to be part of the solution to this issue that has to be remedied.
The South African Law Journal (SALJ) house style was used as the point of reference. The guide is written in plain language to ensure its accessibility. Juta is in the process of distributing these writing guides to the various universities. Lecturers requiring copies of this should please contact Stef Kruger on the contact information below.
