Becoming a non-executive director
 e IoDSA has published a series of tips for those wanting to position themselves as suitable non- executive directors

• Obtaining the necessary knowledge and skills  e IoDSA has developed a Director Competency Framework, which contains 20 competencies of the ideal director Its courses are aligned to these competencies
• Making your CV ‘board-ready’ CVs need to be appropriate to the position sought
• Building your personal brand via networking
• Understanding which channels boards use to
recruit non-executive directors
• Preparing for the board interview thoroughly
• If shortlisted, attending the Annual General
Meeting at which shareholders will vote on your
nomination
• Not accepting appointment without doing your
own thorough due diligence of the company
• A er accepting appointment, taking further steps to familiarise yourself with the company, including a formal induction process

Parmi Natesan joined the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa (IoDSA) in November 2010 as a senior governance specialist within their Centre for Corporate Governance.
On 1 September 2014, Parmi was promoted
to oversee the IoDSA’s Centre for Corporate
Governance, including board appraisals, governance advisory, thought leadership, governance research as well as forums and committees. Since January 2016, Parmi also oversees the IoDSA’s Director Development Department. Parmi is an executive director on the board of the IoDSA as well as a member of the King Committee, among other forums and committees.
Parmi is a quali ed chartered accountant, registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, with BCom (cum laude) and BCom (Honours) degrees.
