The primary purpose of this brief introduction to the law relating to fundamental rights is to provide law students with a gateway to the acquisition of knowledge of this expanding field indispensible to every lawyer. It is however not intended to serve the purpose of a standard treatise or commentary on the subject. Francois Venter has taught law for more than thirty years, was engaged as a technical advisor in the constitution-writing processes of 1993-1996, is rated by the NRF as a researcher enjoying considerable international recognition, and has published extensively on topical legal themes in South Africa and abroad.
