Juta sponsors 1st National Conference on Paralegalism at TUT
During February, the Department of Law at Tshwane University of Technology hosted the first conference of its kind.
TUT wishes to thank Juta for sponsoring this important conference. Your contribution is much appreciated.
The goals of the conference were to:
• Consider the valuable views expressed by a number of experts in the field of paralegalism
• Bring all interested parties together to explore the different channels available to achieve the goal of the recognition of paralegals in South Africa
• Consider the possible co-operation with established community-based paralegal organisations in order to achieve the goal set out as the conference theme, that is: the recognition of paralegals
• Discuss the feasibility of, and the possible establishment of a National Body representing paralegal teachers, with the aim of achieving the recognition of paralegals in South Africa
The conference would not have been such a huge success without the valued support of Juta.

Deputy Minister of Justice John Jeffery
We need laws for paralegals
Two hundred paralegals have recently been placed at courts to provide capacity on quasi- judicial processes, Deputy Minister of Justice John Jeffery told the First National Conference on Paralegalism in Pretoria. Emphasising that government values the role of paralegals in the quest for justice, and that it is aware of the challenges they face, Jeffery added: ‘I think the most immediate challenge is that there is no regulation. We do need legislation on paralegals.’
